Gun recovered at west Las Vegas high school; juvenile arrested

A juvenile was arrested Thursday after a firearm was reported on campus at Sierra Vista High School in west Las Vegas, according to Principal Jessica Lovell.

School administrators alerted the Clark County School District Police Department, which responded and recovered the gun, Lovell said in a message to families. She said there were no direct threats to students or staff.

The district is following its policies and procedures, Lovell said, and the student will face disciplinary action. Clark County School District policy calls for mandatory expulsion for students who bring firearms to campus, according to the principal’s message.

Lovell urged families to talk with students about school safety and encouraged them to report concerns to a trusted adult. Students can also contact SafeVoice by calling 1-833-216-SAFE (7233).
