Henderson confectioner seeks five holiday hires, offering work experience to people shut out of jobs
Sugar and Spice plans to add about five workers as holiday orders rise, welcoming applicants who face barriers to employment. The Henderson shop provides hands-on training in food preparation, packaging and workplace practices.
As holiday demand builds at Sugar and Spice, a Henderson confectionery is looking to hire about five additional workers — and says applicants do not need prior experience.
Owner Sheri Long said the shop offers opportunities to people who may have difficulty getting hired elsewhere, including people with developmental disabilities or mental health challenges and young adults leaving foster care. The stated requirement is a willingness to learn.
Workers gain practical experience in food handling, packaging, sanitation, health regulations and teamwork, Long said. She sees those skills as a bridge to future employment.
Noah Chambers, 18, is among the current employees. He has said he hopes to pursue pastry work and described the job as a source of confidence and independence. At the shop, he helps prepare treats, including dipping confections in chocolate.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the unemployment rate for people with disabilities was 8.3% in 2025, compared with 4.1% for people without disabilities.
Sugar and Spice is also preparing new holiday products, including a dog treat made with peanut butter and an unsweetened carob coating. The shop works with Empower Us to connect with applicants.
