Bike-lane parking near southwest Las Vegas school raises safety concerns

Bike-lane parking near southwest Las Vegas school raises safety concerns

LAS VEGAS — Cars parked in a marked bike lane near a school off Moule Avenue are forcing bicyclists to contend with traffic, according to local riders who say the problem puts both cyclists and children at risk.

Alan Snell, a Las Vegas Valley cyclist, said vehicles have occupied the lane and extended several feet into the travel lane, leaving little room for people on bikes in the confined area. Signs along the street indicate that parking in the bike lane is prohibited. Video recorded at the location showed cars parked along much of the lane.

Carrie Davies, a parent picking up her child after school, said she parked there because nearby parking was scarce and her child exits through a gate close to the spot. She said she followed what other drivers were doing and chose an open space so she could leave early.

Snell cited a fatal crash about a year earlier involving a 12-year-old girl riding home from school. She had to move around a car parked in a bike lane and was struck and killed by a school bus operator, according to Snell. He said he wants stronger action, including tickets for drivers who violate parking restrictions.

The Clark County School District said it had received no complaints about the issue at the school during the preceding month. The district said its traffic unit patrols schools during the school year, with a focus on safety and visibility in school zones. It did not answer questions about whether bike-lane parking is a broader problem for the district or what penalties drivers could face.
