Las Vegas homeschool arts program seeks larger home as enrollment nears 300

Las Vegas homeschool arts program seeks larger home as enrollment nears 300

Southern Nevada Homeschool Performing Arts is searching for a larger Las Vegas Valley home after its enrollment grew to nearly 300 students, up from about 70 when the program began in 2015.

The program meets one day a week at a church near Sahara Avenue and Maryland Parkway. Its offerings have expanded from band, orchestra and choir to include elementary music, guitar, ballroom dance and introductory theater for younger students.

Space is affecting how classes operate. Piano lessons, for example, take place in a small church vesting area that an instructor described as a closet. In some rooms, the challenge is not only space but the setup: students cannot hear their teacher clearly, an instructor said.

Program leaders said they may have to turn students away or scale back if they cannot find a more suitable facility. The current semester is scheduled to finish at the church; a move could happen as early as next semester if a new space is found.

For families, changing the program’s schedule may not be a workable alternative. Rosa Orozco, whose four sons study multiple instruments, said limited room and parking already make weekly attendance difficult. Her family relies on the program’s Friday schedule because she homeschools Monday through Thursday.

Families and instructors described the program as a rare gathering place for homeschoolers across the Valley. Its growth has brought more classes and opportunities, but the lack of a dedicated, adequately sized location now threatens the program’s ability to serve students.

Southern Nevada Homeschool Performing Arts is seeking a new location. People with a space that may fit the program can call (702) 907-1313 or email SoNVHomeschoolPA@gmail.com.
