Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper resumes practice while awaiting March trial

Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper returned to practice Wednesday, Oct. 21, after stepping away from the team following his June arrest on domestic-violence and felony-assault charges.

Speaking to reporters in the team locker room, Cooper said he understood the seriousness of the allegations and accepted responsibility for his part in the legal process. “Relationships are difficult, no excuses on my end,” he said, adding that he was sorry for the concern surrounding the case.

The charges stem from an incident involving Cooper’s then-girlfriend. He has pleaded not guilty. His trial, originally set for an earlier date, was rescheduled for March 2, 2027.

Cooper thanked the Broncos and his teammates for supporting his return and said he had spent the offseason working on himself, his family and the team. His first game of eligibility is expected to be the Broncos’ road matchup with the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Oct. 25.

His return to team activity comes as the criminal case remains unresolved; the charges are allegations, and Cooper has denied them by pleading not guilty.
