Thornton police search for Luis Arebalo after officer is shot
A Thornton officer was seriously injured but is expected to survive after gunfire Sunday night in the 12800 block of Ulser Street. Police say Luis Arebalo, 37, remains at large and should be considered armed and dangerous.
Thornton police are searching for Luis Arebalo, 37, after an officer was shot during a response to a report of a wanted person Sunday night, Oct. 11, in the 12800 block of Ulser Street.
Officers arrived at about 9:33 p.m. and were speaking with the person who reported the wanted man when the suspect allegedly fired multiple shots, striking one officer, police said. The officer was taken to a hospital with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Investigators have not determined whether Arebalo was hit by officers’ gunfire. He fled and remained at large Monday, according to police.
Police describe Arebalo as 5 feet 9 inches tall and about 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a short-sleeved shirt and dark-colored pants. Police consider him armed and dangerous and advise people not to approach or contact him.
A nearby resident, Quinn Nelson, told a local television reporter he heard several rapid gunshots, then secured his home as sirens arrived. He said he saw numerous police officers along the street.
Anyone who sees Arebalo or has information about where he may be should call 911, police said.
