Man hospitalized after Adams County deputy-involved shooting near I-76
An Adams County sheriff’s deputy shot a man Monday morning after deputies contacted him while responding to a welfare check at 9056 I-76 Frontage Road, according to the sheriff’s office. The call involved a possible arson attempt, and the person deputies were seeking had left the area on foot, the agency said. Deputies found a man matching the description. Shots were fired during the encounter, striking the man, the sheriff’s office said. A knife was recovered at the scene. The man was taken to a local hospital, but officials did not disclose his condition. No deputies were injured. The deputy who fired was placed on paid administrative leave, in keeping with agency policy. The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Team is investigating the shooting, while the sheriff’s office is handling the investigation into the arson call. The sheriff’s office said the shooting was unrelated to a separate incident in Thornton on Sunday night in which an officer was shot. Authorities closed 96th Avenue at Brighton Road; the westbound I-76 off-ramp to 96th Avenue; 96th Avenue east of I-76 at the roundabout; and the I-76 frontage road between 104th and 88th avenues. Deputies asked the public to avoid the area while investigators worked at the scene.
