Van Zandt County plans 64-mile procession for deputy Adam Sherifi

A procession honoring Van Zandt County Deputy Adam Sherifi is scheduled to leave the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office at 10 a.m. Monday and travel to Eubank Funeral Home in Canton, where he will be laid to rest.

The approximately 64-mile route will head south on Interstate 45, east on U.S. 175 to Interstate 20, then east on State Highway 64 toward Canton, according to the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office is asking community members and first responders to gather along the route and on overpasses as the procession passes. Because space in the procession is limited, fire departments and other emergency services are being encouraged to position personnel and vehicles along overpasses instead.

Sherifi, a husband and father of two, was killed Tuesday night in a shooting that also injured a Canton police officer. Officials said the suspect fired more than 800 rounds from a semi-automatic rifle.

The procession will bring Sherifi to the community where he served, as residents and fellow emergency responders are invited to pay their respects.
