Dallas police seek tips after Hilliard Memorial golf-course statue disappears

A 300-pound bronze statue honoring the history of Black golf in Dallas was stolen overnight Sept. 24 from the Elm Thicket/Northpark neighborhood near Dallas Love Field, police said. The six-foot sculpture has not been recovered, and no arrests have been announced.

The statue depicts a golfer and stood in the 6700 block of Mabel Avenue beside a historical marker for Hilliard Memorial Golf Course. The course opened in 1950 and was the first municipal golf course created for African Americans in the southern United States.

Installed last Juneteenth, the sculpture had become a neighborhood landmark. Its removal has left the concrete pedestal empty. Jonathan Maples, president of the Elm Thicket/Northpark Neighborhood Association, and other community organizers are asking residents and anyone who may have witnessed the theft to help locate it.

Dallas police received a report on Sept. 30. The investigation is listed as case No. 820294-2026. Anyone with information can contact Detective D. Cunningham at 214-329-8909 or dante.cunningham@dallaspolice.gov.
