Canton residents line streets to welcome home slain Van Zandt deputy

CANTON, Texas — Residents and law enforcement officers lined Canton’s streets Monday to honor Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Sherifi, whose body was escorted home after he was killed in the line of duty last week.

Sherifi left the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office at 9:55 a.m. in a procession of dozens of law enforcement vehicles. Officers along the route saluted the procession, and people in Canton gathered beneath an American flag raised to greet him.

Sherifi was killed in a shootout with a suspect while attempting to serve a felony warrant, according to authorities. He was a husband and father of three.

The loss has shaken the small community. Lorie Brown, who works for Fuller’s Towing, said the company raised the flag for Sherifi’s return. “It was such a devastating loss. Unimaginable in a small community like this,” said Amanda Gray, president of the Republican Women of Van Zandt club.

Sherifi’s funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Gravity Athletics in Canton.
