COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State restored some momentum Saturday, overwhelming Kent State 59-3 at Ohio Stadium to finish its non-conference schedule with a 2-1 record. Quarterback Julian Sayin completed 18 of 22 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns as the Buckeyes scored early and often. Ohio State led 21-0 after the first quarter and carried a 35-0 advantage into halftime. The game also marked a major milestone for wide receiver Jeremiah Smith. The junior surpassed Michael Jenkins’ Ohio State record for career receiving yards on his second catch, a 23-yard reception that helped set up the Buckeyes’ second touchdown. Smith entered the game needing roughly two dozen yards to move past Jenkins’ total of 2,898 yards. Ohio State’s running game produced three touchdowns from Ja’Kobi Jackson, Bo Jackson and Isaiah West. Ja’Kobi Jackson scored twice, including an 11-yard touchdown in the first quarter and a 1-yard score in the third. Bo Jackson led the team with 73 rushing yards on 11 carries. The Buckeyes continued adding to the margin after halftime. Brandon Inniss made a 49-yard touchdown catch late in the second quarter, pulling in the pass in traffic near the end zone. Freshman Chris Henry later broke free for a 75-yard touchdown reception from backup quarterback Luke Fahey. Ohio State’s defense also contributed to the blowout. Riley Pettijohn intercepted Kent State quarterback Dru DeShields in the second quarter, and freshman defensive tackle Jamir Perez returned a Golden Flashes fumble 25 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Kent State avoided a shutout when Sean Leonard made a 30-yard field goal with 1:56 remaining. The Golden Flashes later intercepted Ohio State backup Tavien St. Clair near the goal line, but could not generate a touchdown. The victory was Ohio State’s fourth in as many meetings with Kent State and extended the Buckeyes’ winning streak against in-state opponents to 105 years, according to the team’s game coverage. It was also Ryan Day’s 84th win as Ohio State’s coach, moving him past Urban Meyer for fourth place in program history. Day said after the game that Legend Bey injured his ankle and did not return. Ohio State will open Big Ten play next weekend by hosting Illinois. Kickoff is scheduled for noon Saturday at Ohio Stadium.
