COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State coach Ryan Day said freshman Legend Bey will have a larger role when the Buckeyes host Kent State at noon Saturday at Ohio Stadium. Bey played only one snap in Ohio State’s game at Texas last weekend, but Day said the team plans to give him more chances on kickoff returns against the Golden Flashes. “We are going to try to get him back now here on kickoff to return some stuff and give him another opportunity back there,” Day said during a Wednesday news conference. The four-star recruit’s first game came Sept. 5 against Ball State, where he returned two kickoffs for a combined 26 yards. Day had instructed Bey to take a knee in the end zone on both plays, and the coach later expressed frustration that Bey repeated the same mistake. Day said Bey’s playing time will depend on his ability to demonstrate reliability to the coaching staff. “For him, he’s just got to continually earn trust with the staff,” Day said. “But that’s what it comes down to.” Bey also showed his potential against Ball State after catching a 25-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Luke Fahey in the second half. Day said continued execution could lead to a more significant role in the Buckeyes’ offense and return game. “The more he does that, the more opportunities he’s going to have,” Day said. “There’s no question that if he can continue to do that and be accountable to do his job on each play, then he can be a real weapon for us. And that’s what we need.” Saturday’s matchup offers Bey an opportunity to turn that potential into a steadier presence as Ohio State continues its season at home.
