COLUMBUS, Ohio — Dan Cain left his truck at Performance Chrysler Jeep Dodge RAM on Auto Mall Drive for repairs. After a week without an update, he visited the dealership and was told the truck was in the service shop, taken apart and being worked on. Later, the service department called to say it had been stolen from the lot the previous night. Cain said the conflicting accounts left him stunned. “This is kind of ridiculous,” he said. Columbus police incident reports show 22 reports involving stolen vehicles or license plates at that dealership from January 2023 through July 2026. That was the highest number among dealership addresses reviewed along Auto Mall Drive, off Georgesville Road; the next-highest address had 15 reports. More than 60 vehicles or plates were reported stolen from the dealership area overall since 2023. Police later found Cain’s truck. He said its front end was smashed and a rear passenger-side window was broken. Cain said the dealership’s response was that it, too, was a victim, and that he was told to contact his insurance company. The dealership’s attorney initially agreed to discuss its security measures, but stopped responding after follow-up requests. Dealership representatives also did not respond to questions about what steps were taken after most of the reports occurred in 2023, or why thefts continued afterward. Cain said he wanted an explanation for how the truck was taken and why he had been given inaccurate information about its location. “Why put me through all this stress when you could have just answered my question from the very beginning?” he said.
