COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 26-year-old man died early Thursday after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing South Hamilton Road in southeast Columbus, police said. Elijah Tompkins was walking west to east near Blakestone Lane in the Winchester area late Wednesday night when he was hit by a southbound 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, according to Columbus police. Police said the Silverado driver had a green light as the truck approached the intersection. Tompkins was crossing against a “Don’t Walk” signal, investigators said. The impact knocked him down, and he came to rest on the west shoulder of the road. Madison Township medics took Tompkins to a hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead at 12:13 a.m. Thursday. Witnesses confirmed the basic sequence of events, police said. The driver stayed at the scene and assisted investigators. No charges were reported in the information available Thursday.
