Hilliard opens community discussion on e-bike and scooter safety rules
HILLIARD, Ohio — Parents and other residents will have a chance Tuesday evening to discuss e-bike and scooter safety and whether Hilliard should add to its rules, which took effect Sept. 23. The city’s regulations require helmets for riders younger than 18 and bar Class 3 scooters from bike paths and shared-use paths. Parents can also face penalties if their children break the rules. The 6 to 7:30 p.m. community meeting at The Well will include small-group sessions for residents to offer feedback. City leaders plan to share some of that input with regional and state officials. At a City Council meeting earlier this summer, some residents called for more safety education for young riders. One attendee suggested training and a test, saying parents should not be left to navigate rules they consider unclear. The discussion comes as Ohio lawmakers consider a proposal to establish statewide e-bike standards, including safety and educational training requirements. A statewide framework could shape how communities such as Hilliard regulate electric bikes and scooters.
