Two Charged in Chicago Burglary Spree, Including 12 Break-Ins in a Single Day

Chicago police have charged two people in connection with a string of burglaries across the city, including a burst of at least 12 break-ins or attempted break-ins on a single day in October, authorities said.

A 17-year-old has been charged with 17 felony counts of burglary and one felony count of attempted burglary, according to Chicago police. The charges stem from a series of burglaries dating back to earlier this year, including several in Northalsted and other North Side neighborhoods in May. But the bulk of the incidents tied to the juvenile suspect occurred on October 15, when at least 12 burglaries or attempted burglaries were reported.

A second suspect, 19-year-old Charles Kelly, has been charged with eight counts of felony burglary. Police accuse Kelly of taking part in the thefts alongside the juvenile. He was taken into custody Wednesday by Chicago police and the U.S. Marshals Great Lakes Task Force, authorities said.

Pretrial detention hearings in both cases are scheduled for this week.

The arrests come as residents and business owners in North Side neighborhoods have pressed for more attention to property crime and its effects on local commerce. The concentration of break-ins on a single day in October underscores how quickly a small group can generate a large caseload for investigators.

Police did not release additional details about the specific locations or property taken in the burglaries. The juvenile suspect has not been publicly identified because of their age.
