Early Morning Crash on Dan Ryan Expressway Kills One Driver, Shuts Northbound Lanes for Four Hours

One person was killed early Sunday morning in a two-vehicle crash on the Dan Ryan Expressway that shut down the highway's northbound lanes for about four hours, according to Illinois State Police.

Troopers were dispatched to the inbound side of the Dan Ryan at approximately 3:11 a.m. after reports of a collision involving two vehicles. When they arrived, first responders pronounced one of the drivers dead at the scene. State police said no immediate update was available on the condition of the other driver.

All northbound lanes were closed for roughly four hours while investigators worked the scene. Traffic was diverted off the expressway at 43rd Street, a detour that pushed early-morning drivers onto local streets on the South Side. The roadway has since reopened.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. State police have not released the name of the person who died, pending notification of family.

The Dan Ryan, which carries Interstate 90 and Interstate 94 traffic through the city's South Side, is among the busiest corridors in the region. Overnight closures on the expressway can ripple into local streets, and Sunday's diversion sent vehicles through Bronzeville and surrounding neighborhoods during the pre-dawn hours.

Anyone with information about the crash is urged to contact Illinois State Police.
