West Mecklenburg High basketball coach arrested, charged with sexual activity with a student

A West Mecklenburg High School basketball coach was arrested this week and charged with sex crimes involving a student, according to court records.

Christopher Lamar Ewell Jr., 30, was taken into custody Thursday, Nov. 5, more than three weeks after the alleged conduct. An arrest warrant alleges that Ewell "engaged in a sexual act" with a 17-year-old student who attends the school. The warrant states the alleged act occurred on Oct. 10 at Ewell's home, where he also allegedly allowed the student to be under the influence of alcohol.

Ewell faces three charges: sexual activity with a student, indecent liberties with a student, and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.

Records show Ewell was initially denied bond and was ordered not to have contact with the student. He was scheduled to appear in Mecklenburg County court on Friday, Nov. 6.

Ewell was listed as the head basketball coach at West Mecklenburg on the sports statistics website MaxPreps.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has not publicly commented on the arrest. The district did not immediately respond to questions about Ewell's employment status or whether additional safeguards are in place for students.

The case is the latest to raise questions about how local schools screen and supervise adults entrusted with student athletes. North Carolina law makes sexual activity between school employees and students a felony, regardless of the student's age of consent, and district policies typically bar employees from providing alcohol to minors or hosting students at their homes without authorization.

Ewell is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise in court. Anyone with information relevant to the investigation is encouraged to contact Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
