Morganton reports 840,000 gallons of sewage overflowed into Hunting Creek
Heavy rain from Isaias’ remnants overwhelmed a Morganton sewer junction box Sunday, sending about 840,000 gallons of sewage into Hunting Creek. A separate, smaller overflow sent roughly 1,500 gallons into a storm drain earlier that morning.
MORGANTON, N.C. — Heavy rain from the remnants of Hurricane Isaias overwhelmed a sewer junction box in Morganton on Sunday, causing about 840,000 gallons of sewage to flow into Hunting Creek, city officials said.
The overflow lasted about two hours. Rainwater entering the sewer system during the storm caused it to exceed capacity, according to a city news release.
A separate overflow occurred earlier Sunday after flooding at a manhole sent about 1,500 gallons of sewage into a storm drain. That spill lasted from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., officials said.
The storm also flooded roads and low-lying areas across Burke County. A mobile home park along Antioch Road was among the hardest-hit locations; officials said residents evacuated voluntarily before the storm.
Isaias made landfall on the Gulf Coast on Oct. 9 and later weakened into a post-tropical system. Its remnants brought heavy rain and strong winds to the Carolinas over the weekend, along with flash flooding and tornadoes. The National Weather Service confirmed multiple tornadoes in the Carolinas on Saturday and Sunday.
Gov. Josh Stein said Monday that no injuries had been reported from the weekend storms. The flooding comes as western North Carolina continues to recover from Hurricane Helene’s devastating impacts in 2024.
