Caldwell County teen not charged after gunfire enters neighbor’s apartment
A bullet fired at a Sawmills apartment went through a wall outlet near where a 3-month-old was sleeping next door. An 18-year-old has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor; the 16-year-old accused of firing the gun was not charged.
A bullet fired inside an apartment in Sawmills pierced a wall outlet in the neighboring unit, close to where a 3-month-old girl was sleeping, according to Caldwell County deputies. The 16-year-old accused of firing the gun was not charged, while an 18-year-old faces a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
The incident happened at an apartment complex on Eli Lane. The bullet left a hole in the living-room outlet cover in the baby’s home, deputies said.
Investigators sought a charge of shooting into an occupied dwelling after consulting juvenile justice officials. But the magistrate did not find evidence of intent, according to court papers. The 18-year-old is accused of failing to secure the handgun. The person told investigators that teenagers were playing with it when it fired.
The baby’s mother, Mackenzie Ellis, said she rushed to get her daughter out after hearing the gunshot. “It’s scary a bullet went through my wall,” she said.
Ellis said she was relieved her daughter was unharmed but upset that the 16-year-old was not charged. “My daughter could have died,” she said, calling the incident a parent’s worst nightmare.
Deputies recovered a Smith & Wesson handgun, which was returned to the 16-year-old’s family. They said they are increasing patrols in the neighborhood.
The shooting raised concerns for residents about the risks of unsecured firearms in a residential setting, especially with children nearby.
