Parkway reopens stretches near Little Switzerland and Linville Falls after Helene damage
The National Park Service reopened several Blue Ridge Parkway sections Monday, leaving 11 miles closed more than two years after Hurricane Helene. Officials expect the remaining repairs to be finished by year’s end.
Several sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia and western North Carolina reopened Monday, bringing the scenic route to within 11 miles of a full reopening, the National Park Service said.
The newly reopened stretches include the Parkway from milepost 63.7 in Virginia to Little Switzerland in North Carolina; a segment from milepost 317.5 near Linville Falls to milepost 324.7; and the portion from Little Switzerland to milepost 340.2 at N.C. 80.
The sections had been damaged by Hurricane Helene more than two years ago. Repair work continues on the remaining closed portions, and Parkway officials expect that work to be completed by the end of the year.
The reopening comes as the region enters its peak fall tourism season, when visitors travel the Parkway to see autumn color and mountain scenery. Travelers should check current Parkway conditions before setting out, as the remaining closures may affect access along the route.
