Arrowood station assault leaves CATS security guard injured; suspect held without bond
A security guard was injured during an assault on the tracks at the Arrowood light rail station in south Charlotte on Tuesday morning, prompting a call for emergency help and renewed concern among some riders about safety on the system. The Charlotte Area Transit System confirmed the incident at the station on England Street. The guard, who works for Professional Security Services, suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, transit officials said. Tommy Curtis Martin was taken into custody shortly before 8 a.m. in connection with the assault. Court records show he faces charges including public disturbance, robbery, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, and assault on a female. The allegations include stealing a woman’s phone, using a rock during the attack on the guard and kicking a woman who was on the ground. The charges have not been proven in court. Police radio traffic at about 7:30 a.m. captured the guard asking for help, saying he had been pushed and was bleeding. A dispatcher then called for immediate backup, reporting that a security officer was down on the tracks. Martin is being held at the Mecklenburg County jail without bond. Judicial records also show prior charges, including resisting an officer and assault on a government official. Courtney Owens, who lives near the station, said she has been riding the light rail less often in recent months. The attack, she said, was troubling because it happened close to home; learning that a security guard was injured made her more concerned about safety. The incident comes as CATS has been expanding security efforts across its network following the death of Iryna Zarutska. Transit officials have pointed to a decline in crime on the Blue Line: total crime in June was about 70% lower than in June 2025. At the same time, federal statistics show overall light rail ridership was down 10% from the previous year.
