Cape and Islands face strongest effects from offshore storm, with high surf expected

An offshore nor’easter could bring showers, gusty winds and rough seas to Cape Cod and the Islands from Tuesday through Thursday. The storm’s track will determine whether rain and wind spread farther inland, but high surf is expected either way.

A developing nor’easter moving north from off the Carolinas could bring unsettled weather to parts of southern New England later this week, with the Cape and Islands likely to see the strongest effects.

The storm is expected to remain offshore, limiting its impact on Greater Boston. Forecasters are watching for a few showers, gusty northeast winds and rough seas along the coast. Gusts could reach 40 mph or more on the Cape and Islands; around Boston, gusts could approach 30 mph at times from Tuesday through Thursday.

The best chance for rain is Wednesday into Thursday, but the storm’s path remains uncertain. A track closer to the coast could bring more rain and stronger winds, including to inland communities. A track farther east would leave much of Massachusetts cooler but relatively dry. High surf is possible regardless of the storm’s path.

Temperatures are forecast to reach the low 60s Tuesday, then fall back into the 50s from Wednesday through Friday. The storm is expected to be less disruptive than the late-September system that brought several days of clouds, rain and gusty winds to the region.
