Police seek arrest warrant after Lowell traffic-stop escape injures trooper

Massachusetts State Police are seeking an arrest warrant for a 23-year-old Methuen man accused of striking a trooper while driving away from a traffic stop in Lowell on Sunday night.

The trooper, assigned to the Concord barracks, stopped a black Infiniti sedan on Church Street shortly after 9 p.m. over a license-plate-related violation, according to a State Police report. Police said the driver was taken out of the car and questioned about a bag containing what appeared to be marijuana before getting back into the vehicle and driving off, hitting the trooper.

The trooper sustained minor injuries and was evaluated by Lowell Emergency Medical Services. Police issued a lookout alert for the vehicle and said they were seeking a warrant for the driver’s arrest.

The man is accused of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, resisting arrest, negligent operation, failing to stay within marked lanes, a license-plate violation, lacking a valid vehicle inspection sticker, providing marijuana to someone under 21 and failing to stop for police. The allegations have not been adjudicated in court.

Police did not provide further details about the search or the driver’s identity.
