Stark house fire kills resident and two dogs; woman hospitalized in Boston

A man and two dogs died in a house fire in Stark early Sunday, and a woman was flown to a Boston hospital with serious injuries, fire officials said.

The blaze at a home on Montgomery Road was reported around 1:30 a.m. after a woman who lived there alerted a neighbor, who called 911, according to the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office and Stark’s fire chief. The neighbor tried to enter the home but was blocked by the flames.

Firefighters from Milan and Groveton responded. The house was engulfed, with flames coming through doors and windows, and crews brought the fire under control after about three hours. The man and dogs were found dead inside. The woman was taken by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital.

Investigators believe a wood stove may have started the fire, but the cause remains under investigation. Officials said the fire is not considered suspicious. The man’s identity was being withheld pending an autopsy scheduled for Monday.

Stark, a town of about 500 residents, is in northern New Hampshire, north of Mount Washington and near the Vermont border.
