Infant dies in 10-vehicle I-20 wreck after Georgia State Patrol pursuit
A 7-month-old infant was killed in a 10-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 in DeKalb County late Saturday after a Georgia State Patrol pursuit, authorities said. Two other infants were taken to a hospital, and multiple people were injured. State investigators said 33-year-old Cameron Gabriel Kemp was speeding and weaving through traffic without headlights when a trooper tried to stop him. Kemp continued driving recklessly and lost control on the Wesley Chapel Road exit ramp, setting off the pileup, authorities said. Kemp also died from his injuries. Witness Jacques Hall, who arrived shortly after the crash, described a chaotic scene. “There were people screaming. There were people hollering that there were babies stuck in the car,” he said. The Georgia State Patrol said the driver’s speed, lack of headlights and movement through traffic posed an immediate threat to other road users, and defended the decision to pursue him. The crash has renewed debate over when police should chase drivers. Devin Barrington-Ward, an activist who has spent a decade urging elected officials and law enforcement agencies to impose tighter restrictions on pursuits, said this chase was not justified. He said a pursuit over traffic violations can intensify an already dangerous situation. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating. Authorities have not released further details about the injured people or the circumstances of the crash.
