Autopsy found heart condition contributed to death of Douglas County student, DA says
Douglas County District Attorney Dalia Racine said Monday she will not file criminal charges over the death of 12-year-old Jada West, who died after a fight with another student in March. An autopsy found an underlying heart condition contributed to her death, but investigators could not determine that the fight caused it.
Douglas County District Attorney Dalia Racine said Monday she will not pursue criminal charges in the death of Jada West, a 12-year-old who died after a fight with another student near a school bus stop in March.
An autopsy found an underlying heart condition contributed to West’s death. Racine said investigators could not make a definitive medical determination that the altercation caused the condition or her death.
“A child’s death, understandably, brings shock and difficult questions,” Racine said at a news conference. “Jada’s family and this community deserve a careful examination of the evidence and a clear explanation of the findings.”
Investigators said West and a 14-year-old student had been arguing after getting off a school bus. The dispute became physical, and both girls fell, hitting their heads on the pavement, Racine said. Other students separated them.
West collapsed shortly after walking away, according to Racine. Her mother, a nurse, provided aid before West was taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. She was later moved to Scottish Rite, where she died.
Investigators reviewed video and interviewed witnesses. Racine said the evidence did not establish who initiated the physical fight, and investigators found no substantial evidence of ongoing bullying between the girls before the incident. Some students reported receiving threats after videos of the fight circulated, she said.
Racine cautioned against treating unverified claims and assumptions as established facts, particularly when they involve grieving families and children. The investigation’s findings do not lessen the loss for West’s family or the community, she said.
