Georgia Power said Oct. 5 that an unauthorized third party accessed limited information associated with about 300,000 of its customer accounts through an incident involving roughly 400,000 accounts overall. The company said it detected suspicious activity involving its online customer portal and took steps to stop it. Georgia Power also notified law enforcement and said its investigation found no evidence that unauthorized access was continuing. The utility has not said what information may have been accessed or when the activity took place. It said it is notifying affected customers and will provide them with free credit monitoring. “We understand the trust our customers place in us and remain committed to protecting their information,” the company said in a statement.
