Atlanta robbery suspect arrested after taking patrol car and crashing on I-675
Phelan Thorpe was arrested Monday after police say he took a marked Atlanta patrol car while officers investigated in Midtown and crashed into a tanker truck on I-675. He was wanted in connection with a Saturday robbery in which a woman was assaulted, police said.
A man wanted in connection with an armed robbery in Midtown was arrested Monday after stealing a marked Atlanta police vehicle and crashing it into a tanker truck on Interstate 675, according to police. The crash happened southbound near Forest Parkway and Exit 5 in Clayton County.
Atlanta police identified the suspect as Phelan Thorpe. Officers had been sent to investigate a report of a wanted person who was believed to be armed with a gun when Thorpe allegedly took a patrol car parked outside the location. Police said he was taken into custody without further incident and brought to a hospital with minor injuries. No one else was hurt.
Thorpe was wanted in connection with a robbery reported Saturday at 10 Peachtree NE. Police said a man followed a woman from the Midtown MARTA station, confronted her and claimed to have a gun before demanding her purse and iPhone. During a struggle, the suspect allegedly punched her with a closed fist, took her phone and driver’s license, then ran north on West Peachtree Street.
Tina Turner, an Ellenwood resident, questioned how someone could get access to a police vehicle. “My thing is how would he get access to steal an Atlanta Police car,” she said. “Only thing we can do is ask God to cover us.”
