Washington ferry disruptions strand commuters across four routes Tuesday
Cancellations and delays hit four Washington State Ferries routes Tuesday morning, disrupting commutes and appointments. The problems followed a Monday staffing shortage that left just five of the system’s 18 boats operating.
Washington State Ferries cancellations and delays disrupted service on four routes Tuesday morning, leaving passengers scrambling to reach work, school and appointments.
The affected routes were Seattle/Bainbridge, Edmonds/Kingston, Mukilteo/Clinton and Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth. The disruptions followed a difficult Monday, when 23 employees called out and, according to ferry officials, no one agreed to fill the open positions. Only five of the system’s 18 boats were operating that day.
Avery Maverick, who was traveling from Edmonds to Kingston on her way to work in Port Angeles, said she checked the schedule before leaving but learned of a cancellation after she had taken the I-5 exit. She expected to arrive about 30 minutes late to a first meeting with a client.
Ryan Neble said he arrived expecting to catch the 7:50 a.m. ferry, only to find it had been canceled. He said he was left waiting about an hour and a half early and questioned whether crews could be assigned in advance to keep service running.
In a post on X, Washington State Ferries said service had returned to normal, with minimal early-morning cancellations, as crews were moved back into place after Monday’s disruptions. But cancellations and delays were reported on the four routes Tuesday morning.
The agency advised riders to sign up for alerts and check schedules before traveling. Washington State Ferries officials were unavailable to discuss the cancellations and employee call-outs.
