Tacoma Narrows westbound work will restrict SR 16 traffic through Nov. 8
Two westbound lanes on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and the Jackson Avenue on-ramp are scheduled to close from Oct. 24 through Nov. 8 for expansion-joint repairs. WSDOT warns of afternoon delays of an hour or more between Tacoma and Gig Harbor.
Drivers crossing the Tacoma Narrows westbound on State Route 16 should prepare for a two-week disruption as crews replace a deteriorating section of an expansion joint.
The Washington State Department of Transportation plans to close two westbound lanes beginning at 5 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, with the closures scheduled to continue through Sunday, Nov. 8. The Jackson Avenue on-ramp will also be closed during that period. The HOV lane will remain open to all vehicles, leaving two lanes available to traffic.
WSDOT says crews need daylight to work both above and below the bridge deck and to pour concrete around the replacement joint. The repair is the latest of 11 the agency says it has made to the westbound bridge in the past two years.
The department warns that afternoon trips from Tacoma toward Gig Harbor could take an hour or longer. Congestion is also expected on westbound SR 16 approaching the bridge and on nearby side streets. WSDOT advises travelers to leave extra time, consider alternate routes where possible and enter the work zone slowly and attentively. The agency also recommends keeping a vehicle’s fuel tank full or its battery charged.
The closures are expected to affect people who travel across the Narrows for work, school and activities. Scott McGinty, who takes a bus to his job in Seattle, said the commute already takes several hours a day, but supported the repair for safety. Gig Harbor resident Julie Cain said the restrictions could complicate school and sports trips for her family, including travel between her son’s Tacoma school and practice in Gig Harbor.
WSDOT says roughly 90,000 vehicles use the Narrows Bridge each day. A separate project to refurbish the bridge’s expansion joints is in design, with construction anticipated in 2027.
