Federal Way football player, 16, dies after crash sends car onto sidewalk

A 16-year-old boy died Friday night after a two-car crash in Federal Way sent a vehicle onto a sidewalk and struck him, police said.

Officers were called at about 10:48 p.m. Oct. 23 to the 30400 block of Pacific Highway South, near Federal Way High School, for a collision involving a pedestrian. A preliminary investigation found that two vehicles collided at an intersection. One then left the roadway and hit the boy, who was standing on the sidewalk, police said.

Police and fire crews tried to help the teenager, but he died at the scene. Both drivers stayed there. Police arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of vehicular homicide and said they suspect he was driving under the influence. The arrest is not a conviction.

The department’s Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate. Police have not released further details about what led to the collision.

Family and friends gathered Saturday at a growing memorial near the crash site. An uncle told KOMO News that the teenager played on the Federal Way High School football team.
