Southbound I-405 between Canyon Park and Bothell to close Friday night through Monday
WSDOT plans to shut every southbound lane from 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday for work on the I-405/Brickyard project. Drivers should expect delays on alternate routes, with Sunday traffic potentially heavier during the Seahawks-49ers game.
BOTHELL, Wash. — All southbound lanes of Interstate 405 between Canyon Park and Bothell are scheduled to close at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, and remain shut until 4 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12, as crews work on a highway improvement project.
The Washington State Department of Transportation expects backups as traffic from I-405 shifts onto nearby roads. The closure is part of the agency’s I-405/Brickyard to State Route 527 improvement project.
Affected ramps include the State Route 527 entrance to southbound I-405, the Northeast 195th Street on- and off-ramps, and the southbound I-405 exit to State Route 522. Northbound I-405 will remain open.
WSDOT spokesperson Lauren Penning urged drivers heading south toward Seattle or Bellevue to check traffic before leaving and consider other routes. Interstate 5 may be an option for travelers who do not need to reach Bothell, she said, but I-5 is already experiencing slowdowns because of Revive I-5 work on Seattle’s Ship Canal Bridge.
State Route 527 is the main detour, but Penning cautioned that it cannot accommodate traffic volumes typical of I-405. Drivers should avoid using it as a through route if possible.
The closure could bring additional congestion Sunday, when the Seahawks are scheduled to play the 49ers at Lumen Field. Zach Beetham, who works in Bothell, said local traffic was already difficult and he expected conditions to worsen during the closure.
WSDOT advises motorists to allow extra travel time and plan routes in advance.
