DNA links Graham child’s fatal injuries to dog, Pierce County says
DNA testing confirmed that a dog killed a 5-year-old girl in Graham on Aug. 13, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said. The county prosecutor’s office will review the incident.
DNA testing confirmed that a dog caused the fatal injuries to a 5-year-old girl in Graham, the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said Oct. 8, resolving investigators’ initial uncertainty about whether another animal was involved.
Deputies were called Aug. 13 to the 30200 block of 92nd Avenue East after a woman reported that her granddaughter was missing and might have wandered into nearby woods or been kidnapped. The girl and her grandmother had been staying at a family friend’s home while preparing for a camping trip.
Deputies found the family friend’s large dog standing over the child in the yard. The girl had severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies shot the dog after it acted aggressively and prevented them from approaching her, the sheriff’s office said.
The family knew the dog and had no concerns about it before the attack, according to the sheriff’s office. The Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office will further review the case.
