Washington search crews are looking for a 1976 Piper Cub that lost contact with air traffic control while flying from British Columbia to Idaho. Officials are asking witnesses to report possible sightings and say the public should not join the search.

Search teams scour Okanogan County for missing Piper Cub and two people aboard
OKANOGAN COUNTY, Wash. — Washington State Department of Transportation search crews looked by air and on the ground Sunday for a missing Piper Cub and the two people aboard, after the aircraft was last reported near U.S. Highway 97. The 1976 plane departed Penticton, British Columbia, bound for Grangeville, Idaho. The pilot lost communication with Seattle Center air traffic control, WSDOT said. The pilot’s daughter later reported the plane and its occupants missing to the Okanogan County Sheriff’s Office. WSDOT’s Air Search and Rescue unit was notified Saturday evening. Teams focused on the plane’s last known radar locations between Oroville and Okanogan, using cellphone data to help narrow potential search areas. Ground search resources from the Colville Confederated Tribes were also contacted to assist. No distress signal was detected overnight, WSDOT said. With favorable weather, the agency planned to continue air operations Sunday, including helicopter flights followed by another aircraft over the search area. Anyone who may have seen or heard the plane Saturday night, or noticed anything relevant in the area, is asked to call the State Emergency Operations Center at 800-258-5990. WSDOT said it does not need members of the public to conduct air or ground searches. State law assigns WSDOT responsibility for coordinating aerial search and rescue in Washington, working with volunteer search-and-rescue groups, law enforcement and other agencies.
