Pierce County ferry shutdown to continue Tuesday as repair parts clear customs

Pierce County ferry service will remain suspended Tuesday as crews wait for repair parts to clear U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the county said Monday afternoon.

The county said it did not have a timeline for completing the repair or restoring service. The ferry vessels Steilacoom II and Christine Anderson were both out of service, according to the county. The disruption affects residents and travelers who rely on the ferry connections serving Steilacoom, Anderson Island and Ketron Island.

County officials said they are coordinating with the state Department of Social and Health Services and Department of Corrections to identify nearby alternatives for transporting passengers and vehicles. Details about any replacement trips had not yet been released.

The county said it was working with partner agencies to speed delivery of the needed parts and restore service as quickly as possible. It acknowledged the disruption was causing hardship for island residents and families.

Riders can receive updates through the Rider Alert system in the City Experiences app, which the county recommends as the fastest way to get service information. Pierce County said it planned to issue another update by 6 p.m. Monday.
