Federal Way mourns Deejay Tuiasosopo, 16, after fatal crash near high school
A memorial grew over the weekend at the Federal Way gas station where Deejay Tuiasosopo was killed after a vehicle struck him on a sidewalk. Police arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of DUI and vehicular homicide.
A growing memorial of candles, flowers, balloons and handwritten messages marked the spot in Federal Way where 16-year-old Deejay Tuiasosopo was killed Friday night after a vehicle struck him on a sidewalk near his high school.
Tuiasosopo was struck near Pacific Highway South and South 304th Street after a two-vehicle crash sent one vehicle onto the sidewalk, Federal Way police said. The crash happened at about 10:45 p.m. Oct. 23, shortly after Tuiasosopo had played in a home football game for the Federal Way Eagles, friends said.
More than 150 people gathered at the gas station parking lot where he died for a memorial Saturday. Friends, teammates, relatives and a Federal Way High School teacher returned Sunday, adding tributes and relighting candles. Candy was among the offerings; Tuiasosopo’s friend Samson Benea said the teen had a sweet tooth.
Tuiasosopo’s family said he was a student-athlete who valued both school and sports and cared about people he had just met as well as longtime friends. In a statement, relatives said they were seeing the breadth of his impact in the messages, memories and support shared by students and families across King County, from Tukwila and Federal Way to Auburn and Graham.
Benea, a junior who said he had known Tuiasosopo since seventh grade, described him as an older-brother figure and a leader among friends. He said he had spent time with Tuiasosopo shortly before learning of his death.
“I just want him to never be forgotten,” Benea said. He urged people who see someone under the influence not to let that person drive, suggesting they arrange a ride instead.
Police arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular homicide. He was expected to make an initial court appearance the following week. The allegations had not been resolved in court as of the report.
