One person was killed and another injured when a BNSF freight train struck two pedestrians in downtown Puyallup on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue responded at about 1:50 p.m. to the collision near the 200 block of North Meridian Street. One person died at the scene, and the second was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

A fire department spokesperson said a bystander may have been helping a person with a mobility aid cross the tracks when the collision happened. That account has not been confirmed, and authorities have not released the identities of those involved.
