Seattle seeks neighborhood input as it plans 200 curbside EV chargers

Seattle residents can nominate locations for as many as 200 new public Level 2 chargers, with installations planned from 2027 through 2030. The city says it will prioritize neighborhoods with fewer charging options and greater need, including areas where many residents park on the street or live in apartments.

Seattle seeks neighborhood input as it plans 200 curbside EV chargers

Seattle is inviting residents to suggest locations for up to 200 new public electric-vehicle charging stations planned across the city by 2030.

The proposed curbside Level 2 chargers are intended for neighborhoods with limited access to charging. Residents can submit suggestions online at https://st.news/evcharger.

Seattle Department of Transportation officials say the effort is designed in part for people who live in apartments or depend on street parking and cannot install a charger at home. Level 2 stations can add up to 30 miles of driving range per hour of charging.

About one in four newly registered vehicles in the greater Seattle area is electric, according to SDOT. The department and Seattle City Light installed 31 chargers during a pilot in 2023 and 2024; officials said the stations saw heavy use and received positive community feedback.

The city plans to review applications and select locations on an ongoing basis through fall 2027. Installation is expected to proceed in phases from fall 2027 through 2030.

The project will be funded through Seattle’s eight-year, $1.55 billion transportation levy, approved by voters in 2024. The levy also supports other public charging stations planned for parks, community centers and libraries. The city has framed the investments as a way to reduce air pollution, address climate change and broaden access to lower-emission transportation.
