Federal Way cameras will monitor four school corridors day and night starting Nov. 1
Four existing speed cameras in Federal Way will begin operating around the clock on Nov. 1, enforcing a 20 mph limit during school-zone hours and the regular 35 mph limit at other times. Drivers speeding outside school hours will receive warnings for one month before civil fines begin.
Federal Way will expand speed-camera enforcement at four school locations to 24 hours a day, seven days a week, beginning Nov. 1, the city announced Oct. 21.
The cameras currently issue citations during designated school hours, when flashing beacons mark the 20 mph school-zone limit. Under the expanded program, they will enforce the applicable speed limit at all times: 20 mph during school-zone hours and 35 mph at other times.
For the first month, drivers caught speeding outside posted school-zone hours will receive warnings rather than citations. Enforcement during school hours will continue as usual during that period. Starting Dec. 1, camera-recorded violations can result in civil infractions of up to $290, not including late fees.
The four locations are SW Campus Drive and 21st Avenue SW near TAF@Saghalie, 1st Avenue S at Panther Lake Elementary School, and SW 320th Street at Twin Lakes Elementary School.
The city said the change is part of its broader automated enforcement program and is intended to improve safety and reduce speeding in high-risk areas.
