A 30-year-old Bellingham woman was arrested Tuesday in connection with the February mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, where eight people were killed, including five children. Federal authorities allege James Cody Bryant communicated with the shooter for at least six months before the attack through Discord. According to court documents, Bryant offered money, technical help and tactical advice, and agreed to help livestream the shooting. Investigators said the stream does not appear to have reached additional accounts. The shooting killed two people at the shooter’s home and six at nearby Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. FBI Seattle Special Agent in Charge Mike Herrington said the alleged conversations shifted toward violence as the relationship developed. He described the messages as difficult to read because of their casual tone. Court documents allege Bryant promised not to report the shooter. Authorities say Bryant at times tried to dissuade the shooter from carrying out the attack, but did not notify officials and continued providing help. “It’s never too late to report information that may save lives,” Herrington said. Federal agents first interviewed Bryant two days after the shooting, according to the documents. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd said investigators needed to obtain communications through subpoenas and warrants, and took care in pursuing what he described as a novel use of a federal statute. Bryant was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder people in a foreign country. The allegations have not been tested at trial. The case is expected to go before a grand jury, which will determine whether to issue a formal indictment. Bryant is due in court next week for a detention hearing. If convicted, she could face life in prison.
