Valkyries-Dream Finals Game 6 moved to Atlanta’s larger arena for Thursday matinee

If the WNBA Finals reach a sixth game, the Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream will play Thursday at State Farm Arena, with tipoff set for 9:30 a.m. Pacific. The venue can hold more than 17,000 fans, compared with about 3,500 at the Dream’s regular home arena.

The Golden State Valkyries and Atlanta Dream will meet at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena for Game 6 of the WNBA Finals on Thursday, with tipoff scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Eastern time, or 9:30 a.m. Pacific, the league announced Monday. The game will be played if the series lasts long enough to require it.

The move gives Atlanta a much larger venue for a potential championship game. State Farm Arena, home of the NBA’s Hawks, can accommodate more than 17,000 fans. The Dream usually play at Gateway Center Arena, which seats about 3,500. Games 3 and 4 at State Farm Arena sold out.

The scheduling reflects a crowded calendar at the building: The Hawks are set to host the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday night, and that game could not be moved to another date or venue. The Hawks’ start time was pushed back an hour to allow arena staff to prepare for the NBA game after the WNBA contest. The leagues considered ways to keep Game 6 in prime time but settled on an afternoon start.

“The sellout crowds and extraordinary atmosphere at State Farm Arena for Games 3 and 4 were a tremendous success,” WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a statement. She said the schedule change would give thousands more fans a chance to attend, and thanked the NBA, teams, arena and USA Network for working out the arrangement.

The WNBA had already adjusted the Atlanta schedule to use State Farm Arena: Game 3 was moved up a day, and Game 4 began at 1 p.m. Eastern so the Hawks could host their home opener that evening. The Hawks game was delayed by 30 minutes to allow time to convert the venue between events.

Game 5 is scheduled for Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern, or 5 p.m. Pacific, in San Francisco. The Valkyries came back from two straight losses to Atlanta with a road win that evened the series at 2-2, setting up a pivotal fifth game before the teams head back to Atlanta.
