Valkyries even WNBA Finals with 67-62 win over Atlanta in Game 4
Golden State built a 16-point halftime lead and held off Atlanta’s second-half push to tie the Finals at two games apiece. The series returns to San Francisco for Game 5 on Monday at Chase Center.
The Golden State Valkyries tied the WNBA Finals at two games apiece Saturday, beating the Atlanta Dream 67-62 on the road in Game 4 and setting up a pivotal return to San Francisco.
After dropping two straight games, Golden State changed its starting lineup: Tiffany Hayes and Kaila Charles, usually reserves, opened the game. The Valkyries’ edge came from defense and extra possessions. They controlled the boards, forced turnovers and took 57 shots in the first half to Atlanta’s 27, building the series’ largest halftime lead at 16 points.
Atlanta mounted a push early in the third quarter, scoring 14 of the period’s first 18 points. The Valkyries weathered the run, including a deep 3-pointer from DeWanna Bonner, and kept the Dream from taking control.
Hayes helped preserve the lead with timely drives to the basket. Center Kiah Stokes contributed offensive rebounds and blocks as the game tightened in the final minute. Golden State held on for the five-point win, despite its shooting struggles continuing.
The teams will meet for Game 5 at Chase Center on Monday at 5 p.m. The winner will move within one victory of the championship, with the Finals now guaranteed to return to Atlanta for at least one more game.
