Valkyries clamp down on Reese, pull even with Atlanta in WNBA Finals
Golden State held Angel Reese to eight points and beat the Dream 67-62 in Atlanta to tie the best-of-seven series at two games apiece. The teams return to California for Game 5 on Monday.
The Golden State Valkyries evened the WNBA Finals on Saturday, beating the Atlanta Dream 67-62 at State Farm Arena behind a defensive effort that limited Angel Reese to eight points.
Gabby Williams led Golden State with 17 points. Rhyne Howard scored 19 for Atlanta, which played before a sellout crowd of more than 17,000.
Reese, who had averaged 25.5 points and 14 rebounds across Atlanta’s previous two wins, made just two of 12 shots. She had recorded a double-double in each of the first three games of the series.
Golden State built a 16-point halftime lead, but Atlanta cut the gap to 61-55 midway through the fourth quarter. Veronica Burton answered with a three-pointer. The Dream later pulled within four after Howard completed a three-point play with 28 seconds remaining, but Burton made a free throw and Atlanta could not score on its next possession.
The win came after the Valkyries fell behind 2-1, including a lopsided Game 3 loss. Before Game 4, Burton said the team needed to address discipline and attention to Atlanta’s players without overreacting, while recognizing the urgency of the situation.
The best-of-seven series now shifts back to California for Game 5 on Monday, with the championship race level at 2-2.
