SF Democratic Party switches District 8 endorsement to Gary McCoy after Yekutiel exits race
The San Francisco Democratic Party endorsed Gary McCoy for District 8 supervisor on Sunday, after its previous pick, Manny Yekutiel, withdrew amid sexual assault allegations. Party Chair Nancy Tung apologized to the first person to come forward but said she will remain in her post.
The San Francisco Democratic Party voted Sunday to endorse Gary McCoy for District 8 supervisor, replacing its earlier endorsement of Manny Yekutiel, who left the race after three men accused him of sexual assault.
The vote came during a party meeting where Chair Nancy Tung addressed the party’s decision to back Yekutiel despite allegations made public in July by Brad Chapin. Tung said she had apologized to Chapin both publicly and privately.
Chapin said he is working toward forgiveness and hopes to work with Tung to change how the party responds to such matters. He also disputed descriptions of the alleged assault as groping, saying, “It was a violent assault.” Tung said she wanted to emphasize that what happened to Chapin was a violent act.
Two additional allegations emerged earlier this month, when a couple said Yekutiel sexually assaulted them at a 2023 Pride party. Yekutiel ended his campaign less than a day after their interview became public. He has denied the allegations and apologized for crossing boundaries.
Tung said she would remain party chair despite calls for her resignation. The party’s new endorsement is for a district that includes the Castro and Noe Valley neighborhoods.
