San Francisco Democratic committee shifts District 8 endorsement to Gary McCoy
San Francisco’s Democratic County Central Committee voted unanimously Sunday to rescind its endorsement of Manny Yekutiel and instead support Gary McCoy in the District 8 supervisor race, a decision that followed hours of public comment and criticism of party leadership. The committee’s 29-0 vote voided an endorsement it had given Yekutiel in August. He suspended his campaign Oct. 1 after a new sexual assault allegation was reported against him. Yekutiel has faced allegations from multiple people; the allegations have not been established in court. His name will remain on the ballot. During the meeting, some speakers called for party chair Nancy Tung to resign, while others defended her against what they characterized as politically motivated attacks. Tung acknowledged that the party’s sexual misconduct policy had failed in its first test. “We did not do right by Brad Chapin,” she said, referring to the first man to accuse Yekutiel. “We did not do right by survivors.” Tung said she would serve out the rest of her term and revise the policy with Chapin’s input. She rejected calls to step down, saying, “If there are issues with my leadership, I am sure people will vote me out.” The endorsement reversal gives McCoy the party committee’s backing as the District 8 contest proceeds, while Yekutiel remains listed as a candidate.
