GrowSF shifts District 8 support to Patel after poll puts her close to McCoy
A GrowSF-commissioned poll found Gary McCoy and Darshini Patel in a close contest for San Francisco’s District 8 supervisor seat after Manny Yekutiel withdrew. The group, which had previously endorsed Yekutiel, said it would back Patel and spend roughly six figures criticizing McCoy’s record.
A poll commissioned by political group GrowSF found Gary McCoy and Darshini Patel leading a close race for San Francisco’s District 8 supervisor seat, days after Manny Yekutiel withdrew amid sexual assault allegations.
The web poll surveyed 421 likely voters from Oct. 5 to 9. McCoy, a former aide to Rep. Nancy Pelosi and longtime city political figure, placed first; Patel, a former DoorDash employee and campaign organizer, placed second. Their results were within the poll’s reported 5-percentage-point margin of error.
GrowSF said it would endorse Patel after reviewing the results and planned to spend roughly six figures on efforts criticizing McCoy’s record. One planned ad targets McCoy over a lawsuit he pursued in response to remarks on Twitter.
The group had previously endorsed Yekutiel, whose support fell sharply in the survey after he left the race. GrowSF is aligned with moderate city politics and has spent heavily in local contests, including supporting supervisors Alan Wong and Stephen Sherrill in the June primary.
The District 8 contest covers Noe Valley, the Castro and Glen Park. Because the poll was commissioned by a group with a stake in the race, its findings should be considered in that context; the survey was conducted online, and the published results do not provide candidate vote shares.
