Missing Yuba City teen found after Kern County crash; Texas man faces felony charges
A 17-year-old reported missing in Yuba City was rescued from a burning car in Kern County after a pursuit that ended when the driver went off a cliff, police said. The 26-year-old suspect is being held without bail on multiple charges.
A 17-year-old Yuba City girl reported missing from her home was found alive in Kern County after a police pursuit ended with a car going off a cliff and catching fire, authorities said.
Yuba City police said they received a report on Sept. 27 that the teen, who has an underlying medical condition, was missing. Detectives used license plate reader technology to track her and Cameron Childers, a 26-year-old Texas resident, to Bakersfield the next day.
When officers tried to contact Childers, he allegedly fled toward the Lake Isabella area. The California Highway Patrol joined the pursuit and deployed tire spikes. Childers then allegedly drove off a cliff, according to police. Officers rescued both him and the teen from the burning car. Each sustained minor to moderate injuries, police said.
Childers is being held without bail at the Lerdo Justice Facility in Kern County. He faces felony charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, child abuse and evading police, as well as a misdemeanor resisting-arrest charge, according to jail records and court documents. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is represented by the Kern County Public Defender’s Office.
Police said Childers had pending criminal charges in Texas related to alleged possession of child sexual abuse material. A preliminary hearing in the Kern County case was scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Superior Court’s Metro Justice Building in Bakersfield.
