Driver killed in rollover crash off U.S. 101 south of Gilroy

A vehicle left southbound U.S. 101 and overturned near Crocker Lane early Sunday, killing one person and blocking lanes. The California Highway Patrol is investigating what caused the crash.

One person died early Sunday after a vehicle left southbound U.S. 101 and overturned near Crocker Lane, just south of Gilroy, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP logs put the crash at 3:57 a.m. The vehicle rolled and came to rest against a chain-link fence, scattering debris. The driver was trapped in the wreckage, and Gilroy police and fire crews responded to free them. A coroner was requested, and the crash blocked southbound lanes. Authorities have not publicly identified the person who died or said why the vehicle left the freeway. The CHP is investigating.
