San Anselmo police refer Brookside Elementary hate-crime case to prosecutors
Two juveniles have been identified in a hate-crime and vandalism investigation involving antisemitic images and writing at Brookside Elementary School in San Anselmo, Central Marin Police Authority said Oct. 10. The suspects are 12 and 13. Police said they would not release the children’s identities because of their ages. Officers responded at about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 3 after the markings were reported on asphalt near the school’s multipurpose room. Police said the vandalism damaged and defaced the pavement and was classified as a hate crime under California law based on the content of the images and writing and the property damage. The school arranged to remove the markings that night, according to police. Investigators said they had developed substantial criminal evidence and sent the case to the Marin County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges. Police did not announce that charges had been filed. The police authority credited Ross Valley School District officials and community members whose tips helped identify the suspects. The incident brought a community response, with local residents rallying against the antisemitic graffiti.
